On Friday, May 2, the observation hive queen cell had hatched but no evidence of a queen could be found after checking throughout the day. The observation hive bees were moved to a nuc box and three frames containing a year old queen was removed from another hive to the observation hive in order to show the observation hive at RiverFest. The re-queened hive will need to be checked next weekend for the presence of queen cells. On Sunday, a frame from the observation hive where the queen was observed laying was moved to the nuc box colony created on Friday. That nuc needs to be checked next weekend for the presence of queen cells, along with the other nucs with and without new queens. There are currently 9 colonies here in total – 4 with queens and 5 without after starting the 2014 year with three hives. One of those starter nucs is at Irina’s house and the status of that colony should be known next weekend.
